A Sillver Coin & Buckshot from the Merenstein in a piece of Conglomerate. in Plumstead, Western Cape for sale
The Merenstein (Merenstijein) was wrecked off Jutten Island, Saldana Bay in 1702. This piece of conglomerate came into my hands at an auction held by the Atlantic Underwater Club held at the President Hotel in early 1970's. The coin is perhaps a 1664 Ducatoon "Silver Rider"or an "Arend Shelling", and they are rare as they were discontinued by the Dutch in the 1670's and sent to the colonies. What makes this one even rarer is that it is in a piece of conglomerate that contains some buckshot, with the coin being in remarkable condition after being almost 300 years under the sea.
